AMD Hooks It Up

AMD has reportedly made an acquisition which analysts say is a clear-cut signal to help it work on its drive of making virtual Windows XP desktops and software accessible from any connected device. The acquisition is that of hosted desktop innovator Nivio. The Nivio service actually uses virtualization to provide users with a virtual PC, which they can configure and even synchronize with their own computer. The virtual PCs are hosted on AMD servers at data centers and streamed out over broadband.

Moeover, Nivio has declared it can stream a Windows XP desktop, all churned-out with its applications, to any device with a compatible web browser. Software, like most applications you are currently using in your desktop or laptop, can be rented by the month, so users don’t have to purchase a package that’s only needed for the duration of a short project. It also means users can get access to the latest applications on a device that cannot run that software itself, but can act as a kind of thin client in the process. This could also signal the start of people running Linux on a PC.

The Nivio service is currently in private beta-testing mode. This is just the start, people.
