Batteries could just very well be a thing of the past…in just a few years, so to speak. Judging by what Toshiba Corp. unveiled, it could be the start of doing away with batteries and buyers could be scouring the market for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). This is after the well-known company unveiled a prototype version of its equally anticipated media player.

Called the Gigabeat, the prototype media player has a lot of interesting things going on for it that could very well entice a lot of consumers taking note of it. For one, it is said to be capable of performing up to ten hours on just 10 milliliters of methanol. For those keeping count, that is longer than what it would take for a similar product to run with a conventional battery, according to the company.

Toshiba also noted it is planning to release other products powered by DMFC in the next few years.
