BBC Shows, Your PC

It is common practice in the United States that major networks and cable channels lets their viewers and/or casual fans watch clips or even episodes (called “Webisodes”) through the Net. Some upload it through their official sites. Others even utilize other popular websites, like online communities, to show their programs through streaming videos. Of course, some Net users persist on watching it illegally. You know, downloading it without the permission of those who run the networks.

What the British Broadcasting Corp. has done is nothing short of monumental, however. This week, they have made the announcement that they will make most of its shows available for download over the Net. What is really astounding was, the service is actually free of charge! This move is a first for any network, even in the whole world!

BBC’s service lets anyone in the country download television shows up to a week after they have been broadcast. The service, which requires users to download special software, was opened to the public a few days ago. It is called the iPlayer, by the way.
