Blu-ray is slowly but surely distancing itself from HD DVD in the format wars. It is not yet a clear-cut victory, but from where both formats stand now, Blu-ray has the edge but not by much. It is just that, after the past several weeks, more and more positive news has been coming Blu-ray’s way while more and more negative impacts have shuddered HD DVD lately.

Add the latest news from the United Kingdom. Woolworth’s, a famous U.K. retailer, has pulled its support for HD DVD and will no longer be stocking the next-generation DVD format. The decision was made following the performance of players based on Sony’s Blu-ray at Christmas, when the competing format outsold HD DVD by 10-to-1. That is quite too much for their business to take.

There is still a bit of good news for HD DVD. After all, they would still be available online in Woolworth’s web site. Ah, the joys of small victories, apparently. Blu-ray is once again triumphant this week. The momentum is on their side, clearly.

The Panasonic SC-PT750 is a bargain if you judge it by its price tag and in relation to what it really offers. High-end features like HDMI 1080p upscaling, XM satellite compatibility, and an included iPod dock are in here. So does a wireless rear-speaker system. The sound system is definitely something to be experienced. It is quite impressive.

What’s more, it is priced relatively low for something that actually delivers the goods. While one would hanker for more inputs in the system, the sound quality and the extra features make the Panasonic SC-PT750 is a sure-fire hit.

Like a lot of people, it is still quite hard to figure out which format to choose. Should we go for Blu-ray? Or does the HD DVD be the last one standing. Each of these formats have its own set of advantages and disadvantages. However, what torns a lot of potential buyers is the fact that one of these two could wind up being useless in a few years.

So, when choosing the best HD DVD player of the year, it should be the best buy in terms of price tag and what it offers. With that criteria for judging, we ended up with the Toshiba HD-A2. Just check what it has to its credit: absolutely clear image quality on HD DVD. A solid upscaling performance on DVDs. An Ethernet jack in case of firmware upgrades. the Dolby TrueHD decoding. Not to mention the relatively cheap price.

What the most expensive players boast, the HD-A2 possesses as well. Clearly, this player is not a bad investment, whether the format wars last longer than expected.

The war between the two new formats for entertainment, Blu-ray and HD DVD, has been heating up for quite sometime now. Back and forth they have come to claiming victory or finding out what went wrong with their deals. Expect that war to escalate even further now that the holiday season is upon us. Also, expect this player from Samsung to figure prominently as well.

The Samsung BD-P1400 is really capable of providing excellent image quality for your Blu-ray movies. With its onboard decoding from Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution and bitstream output for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, expect the sound support to be simply top notch. Add to that an Ethernet port for updating firmware and you will have a great buy.

Still, it is still questionable if this is a better gadget for Blu-ray than a PlayStation 3. The price is affordable but it may have problems playing future Blu-ray movies as early as next year.

Regarding the connectivity, there is an AV input that will allow you to use the breakout cable included in here and watch any source that can output composite video. Moreover, the Panasonic DVD-LS91 has a digital audio output for connecting to an AV receiver, as well as dual headphone jacks. This way, two people could watch from the player at once.

The DVD LS91 plays CD-Rs filled with MP3 and WMA audio files or JPEG image files. However, it does not have a high-resolution screen and it also lacks support for MPEG-4 and DivX video playback. Still, there are certainly great things here that one could not simply ignore.

Called the Gigabeat, the prototype media player has a lot of interesting things going on for it that could very well entice a lot of consumers taking note of it. For one, it is said to be capable of performing up to ten hours on just 10 milliliters of methanol. For those keeping count, that is longer than what it would take for a similar product to run with a conventional battery, according to the company.

Toshiba also noted it is planning to release other products powered by DMFC in the next few years.

SanDisk is claiming a battery life of seven hours when playing video on the SansaView and 30 hours when listening to music. The SansaView will have a 2.4 inch wide-screen display on which users can view DivX video content converted using the Sansa Media Converter as well as the H.264, Mpeg4 and Windows Media content the player natively supports. The FM radio will have 20 station presets and SanDisk will also include a line-in recording feature. Music download and subscription services with which the SanDisk SansaView works will include such high-profile sites like Napster. Audible audio books will also be able to be enjoyed on the player. The Sansa View would be launched sometime in October.

The Sony product called Rolly is a uniquely designed player. It is capable of twisting and turning while playing music. The player, which Sony has been touting for quite a long time already, is shaped like an egg and can fit into a hand. It has speakers on each end that are normally hidden by dish-like covers, but the covers move to reveal the speakers and reflect their sound when the Rolly is switched on.There’s just one button on the player (an on and off switch) with the other functions being controlled by a pair of rings that surround its body.
