Western Digital recently announced news that they are getting greener than ever. In fact, they have new hard drives that would reportedly use up to forty percent less of what other hard drives are using on power. This is something to look forward to, indeed.
To elaborate further, the company explained four technologies they took advantage of to enable their hard drives to be greener than ever:
The first is IntelliPower which balances spin speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms to avoid always spinning at top speed. Also less current is used during start up allowing more drives to spin up simultaneously resulting in faster system readiness. Second is IntelliSeek which is tasked with optimizing seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.
Next is IntelliPark. It automatically unloads the recording heads during idle moments to reduce aerodynamic drag and disables read/write channel electronics. Lastly, Active Power Management monitors the drive’s workload and immediately invokes idle mode whenever possible to reduce unnecessary power consumption.
The GreenPower line comes in 500GB, 750GB and 1TB capacities.
