Intel Corp. is one of the biggest companies in the world, no matter what line of business we are talking about. Everybody who is anybody sure has one time or another, made use of one of their products. So, it is quite unusual to hear that they intend to get even bigger…by going small.
Intel started its production at a new $3 billion factory in the state of Arizona last week that is its first to mass-produce microchips with circuits almost a third smaller than before, the company said. The new facility, which they have dubbed as Fab 32, started production of a chip design known as Penryn that has circuits just 45 nanometers wide, compared to the 65 nanometers that is currently in use all over the world.
The Penryn chip will be used in desktops, laptops and server computers that run networks. The processors are scheduled to hit the market on November 12, the chip company stated. The design uses a transistor that Intel showed last year. It was an advance that was hailed as the biggest breakthrough in four decades to the basic building block of microchips. Surely, we would hear a lot more from Penryn in the coming weeks.
